Undated but circa 1930s.  Four volumes of Jane Austen’s works from the Winchester Classics series. All three volumes uniformly bound in limp blue rexine with gilt lettering on the spins. Upper text block edges gilt. 12mos.  The covers have a little light shelf wear.  Ungilded text block edges a little spotted.  A little light toning to endpapers in all three volumes.  The first three leaves of ‘Emma’ have signs of old water damage – some waviness and additional browning, with the front paste down lifting.

Nelson’s Classics was a long-running general series of English and European literature published by Thomas Nelson and Sons from 1950 until well into the 1960s.  The Winchester Classics, most of which date from the interwar period, used the same interior text blocks and canonical contents but had superior production with full rexine (imitation leather) bindings, gilt titles and spine decorations and usually but not always gilded upper text block edges, making them ornamental and tactilely pleasing.  A lovely vintage set.
