Nat Tate is an 1998 novel from the Scottish writer William Boyd, telling of an abstract expressionist artist who destroyed much of his own work. The book was published as a hoax, presented as a biography of real artist and several of the biggest names in the art world were taken in. Nat Tate is a combination of the names of two of London’s leading art galleries – the Tate Gallery and the National Gallery. The publisher’s held a launch party on April Fool’s Eve, while Gore Vidal, who was in the hoax, supplied fake quotes to lend authenticity to the story.
