D H Lawrence met Albert Einstein in Baden-Baden in 1921 but his interest in relativity was more deep-seated. Lawrence’s first response to Einstein’s theory of relativity, although he liked the man himself, was ambivalent, perhaps because of the influence of earlier, Victorian relativists such as Darwin, T H Huxley and Ernst Haeckel and modernist artists such as Picasso and Duchamp. This book examines their influences on some of his major works – Women in Love, The Lost Girl, The Fox – and how Lawrence’s interpretation of relativity changed.
