Re-issue. Prelims plus 256pp. In black cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering to spine, top edge coloured (boards strong, square, clean, a little worn at edges, rubbed at spine ends, a little spotting on text block edges). Internally neat, clean, bright and tight barring light toning of endpapers. The Soul of a Bishop is a novel which tells the story of a spiritual crisis that leads Edward Scrope, Lord Bishop of Princhester, to give up his diocese in England’s industrial heartland and leave the Anglican Church. Troubled during World War I by doctrinal doubts and a sense of the irrelevance of his Anglicism as well as nervousness and insomnia, a crisis is precipitated by a visit to a wealthy parishioner’s home where he meets an extremely wealthy American widow, Lady Sunderbund. The other stories in this volume are The Country of the Blind, The Pearl of Love and The Queer Story of Brownlow’s Newspaper. Herbert George (HG) Wells was an English writer, prolific in many genres. He wrote dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, history, satire, biography and autobiography. His work also included two books on recreational war games. Well-known and respected as a social commentator in his life time, Wells is perhaps best remembered for his pioneering science fiction and futurism works, including The Time Machine and the War of the Worlds. We have many more first and early editions of H G Wells’ books in stock. Please inquire for a discount if considering ordering more than one volume.
