A short account of the last nine days in the campaign in Belgium, ending at Dunquerque (Dunkirk) – the scene of the improbable and now legendary rescue, by a fleet of thousands of small boats, trawlers, tourist ships and others, of the troops of the British Expeditionary Force, despite the best endeavours of the German Werhrmacht and the Luftwaffe, followed in some of Masefield’s poems.  Masefield (1878-1967) was a poet and writer, Poet Laureate from 1930 to his death.
