Originally published in 1928, this is a reprint of the much revised and updated 1964 edition. A thorough survey of some of the leading writers considered important, canonical, at the time, with chapters on H G Wells, Conrad, Shaw, Hardy, Brooke, Arnold Bennett etc, with female writers being dealt with in a single chapter; plus sections on genre fiction such as detective fiction, Irish theatre, etc. Orwell and Waugh, among others, are covered as ‘newcomers’.
