1st thus. 78pp. numerous black and white illustrations. Brown cloth-covered boards, black titles on spine. Green endpapers. 4to. Very lightly rubbed spine ends, boards starting to curl. Text block edges just starting to tan. Internally neat, clean, bright and tight. Dust jacket has light shelf wear, some closed tears to top front, stain on front, chipping to edges. This edition of the Jolly Gardener is film set in 14 on 16 point Bembo and printed on a Miller perfector. The illustrations are reproduced in 200 line screen. The paper is 135 gramme Terra Nova Cream Matt Art. Jacket and endpapers are Strathmore Americana, and bound in Tamar Half-Linen, with typesetting, printing and binding were done by W J Mackay Limited, of Chatham, Kent. A very handsome edition, produced to high standards, with exquisite full page plate illustrations. The Jolly Corner, first published in The English Review in 1908, is one of the masterpieces of James’ later period: a ghost story in which Spencer Bolton returns to New York after an absence of 33 years only to become convinced the empty house is occupied by his alter ego, the man he might have been if he had never left.
