First thus. xiv, 718pp. Slate grey cloth-covered boards with gilt titling on the spine. Large 8vo. Cloth very slightly pushed at spine base. Upper text block edge dust dulled. From the blurb on the dust wrapper: “On War constitutes the most significant attempt in Western history to understand war, both in its internal dynamics and as an instrument of policy. Sone the work was first published in 1832 it has been read throughout the world and has stimulated and influenced generations of policy-makers and soldiers as well as intellectuals from Marx and Bismarck to Raymond Aron. The second German edition, published well after Clausewitz’s death, introduced numerous changes to the text which frequently falsified or obscured the author’s intent; and these changes perpetuated in subsequent editions and translations. This edition, edited by two leading historians of modern Europe, for the first time returned to the original to make a classic of Western thought available in English in a reliable and readable text”.
