First published in French in 1824-25, this is the second English language edition, the first published as a single volume, with the text taken from the 12th Paris edition, which included many updates, revisions and corrections by the author. To this the translator has added appendices, appearing for the first time in English, and a copious index. Half bound in leather over marbled boards with gilt lettering and decoration on spine (boards are worn, leather dry, scuffed and rubbed on edges and folds, rounded at corners, marbling partially lost from front boards). All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Gutter cracked and loosening between front endpapers. Previous owner’s bookplate on front paste down endpaper, same name written in manuscript on half-title and again on title page, where there is also a manuscript note to indicate that the author. M Thiers, is referenced in Tolstoy’s War and Peace. There is single short underlining on the translator’s note, else internally in good, clean and strong condition. . Large and thick 8vo.
