Blue cloth-covered boards; black and gilt design and titles on front and spine; blind embossed design to rear board; bevelled edges., green endpapers 12mo. Sun-faded spine, rubbed and cloth fraying at corners and spine ends; light wear to rear board. Top text block edge dusty, all edges tanned and foxed. Front hinge cracked; volume a little loose. Prelims and blank pages at end foxed; occasional foxing throughout, intensity varies. Otherwise, internally neat, clean and bright.

An example of late 19th century temperance fiction, set in a busy mining village in Lancashire before reaching out all the way to Australia as weaves a tale of several interconnected families and lives destroyed by addiction.
