Complete in six volumes.  First edition but later issue with 9 leaves in signature H of volume 4, and accordingly altered subsequent pagination.  All plates present, as called for, including several folding.  In tan polished calf leather, gilt spines with twin red and brown labels, rebacked and re-hinged with original backs laid down, gilt decorations and lettering.  Top edges gilt, all other edges speckled. Each volume has an ex libris bookplate with the motto ‘sibi et amicis’ (for them and their friends) on the front paste down.  Some marginal toning and mild marks on endpapers.  Title pages have suffered from transfer from engraved frontispieces.  A handsome  complete set in very good condition.

The work is not credited but is widely thought to have been edited by a young George Borrow (1803-1881), hte Victorian writer, linguist, traveller and horse-whisperer.
