Volume one (of two) only. xii, 296pp. Half leather over brown cloth, gilt titles on spine. Tartan endpapers. Upper text block edge gilded, other edges speckled. 12mo. Boards heavily worn, rubbed at edges and spine tips, shelf worn with chips in cloth and leather, two labels taped over spine, a few small white spots. A few minor indentations on text block edges. Ex library markings on endpapers, with clumsy removal of, presumably a lending sheet leaving scar long gutter. Previous owner’s name on half title. Various library stamps and lettering on title page and following two pages. A little spotting and toning on first and last few leaves, else internally neat and bright. Brownie of Bodsbeck was the first, short, novel by James Hogg. Set in the Scottish Borders in 1685, it portrays the persecuted Covenanters, and a harsher view of the Royalists; and draws extensively on local superstitions and folklore. First published in 1818 by William Blackwood in Edinburgh and John Murray in London.
