The of the marriage of Harriet Richardson to Louis Staunton and her subsequent death and the trial which followed in which Patrick and his wide Elizabeth,  his brother Louis and his lover Alice Rhodes were accused of causing Harriet’s death.  The case, known as the Penge Murder Mystery and, latterly, the Staunton Case was known for its ground-breaking use (and misuse) of medical evidence and for the questionable impartiality of the presiding judge.
