Bertha M Clay was one of the pen names of Charlotte Mary Brame; and after Brame’s death in 1884, her daughter wrote under the same pen name. Eventually the name became a ‘house name’ used by publisher’s Street & Smith, under which a dozen or so male writers used the pen name. Others too, have used the pen name – and at least 27 different publishers have issued books under it.
