First published in 1913,  Murray’s monumental A History of Chess took him over a decade to write and remains  a standard foundational work on this history of chess.  Murray traces the chess’s evolution from its ancient Indian predecessor, Chaturanga, through Persian and Arabic cultures to the medieval European development and modern rules.
