First edition, second printing.  188pp.  Red cloth boards, black titles on spine. 12mo.  Cloth is heavily worn, rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends.  Front panel very slightly bowed.  Text block edges dust dulled.  Internally neat and clean but pages dull.

Bertha M Clay was one of the pen names of Charlotte Mary Brame; and after Brame’s death in 1884, her daughter wrote under the same pen name.  Eventually the name became a ‘house name’ used by publisher’s Street & Smith, under which a dozen or so male writers used the pen name.  Others too, have used  the pen name – and at least 27 different publishers have issued books under it.
