Frist edition, first impression.  160pp, with a monochrome portrait plate frontispiece.  Black cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering to spine. 8vo.  Boards slightly rounded on corners and spine ends.  Previously a volume held in the St John and Red Cross Hospital Library, with their label on the front paste down, and a depot label on the rear paste down.   Hint of toning to endpapers else internally neat, clean, bright and tight.  In its original dust jacket, not price clipped, rubbed and bumped at edges and heavily, patchily faded, with a couple of small chips on the rear panel.

Thomas Chubb, despite humble roots, became a leading Enlightenment thinker, a self-taught philosopher, writer and prominent 18th century Deist. Known widely as the Sage of Salisbury (his home town), his first published tract controversially argued that the Son of God was subordinate to God the Father: the believed that human reason was the ultimate guide in matters of religion and that true religion was rooted in nature.  His major works included The Supremacy of the Father Asserted (1715) and Discourse Concerning Reason (1731).
