48pp stapled booklet, issue 1576 of the journal, Smart Novels. Lightly illustrated and includes contemporary advertisements. In paper wrappers, printed in red and black on orange paper (rubbed at edges, cracked around oxidising staples, mildly soiled, previous owner’s name in faint pencil at top, small crease and loss on rear cover). Pages mildly toned, last two leaves have small chip on leading edge. Contains the complete ‘The Crumbling of an Idol’ and teasers or continuations of In Dishonour Bound by Amy Miller and A Man and his Mate by F Maria Albanesi. A rare survival of an issue of this weekly ephemeral journal, largely devoted to sensational or sentimental fiction, which started life in 1894 as The Duchess Novelette. Each issue had a lead novelette and, between the wars, a back-up serial.
