The preface indicates that the purpose of this volume is to provide reliable information ‘about certain simple societies as is often only to be found in the original memoirs of an observer’. Sections include Hunters and Collectors, Hunters and Fishers, Gardeners, and Herders and societies examined include Asiatic Pygmies, Plains Indians, Bushmen of the Kalahari, Eskimos, Herders of Arabia etc. A product of its time, the book adopts a paternalistic approach, providing a useful insight into the thinking of the time. 8vo.
