Niels Bohr (1885-1962) was a pioneering Danish theoretical physicist, winning the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1922 for his contribution to the understanding of the atomic structure and quantum mechanics, before formulating the liquid drop model of the nucleus in the 1930s, a model which would prove crucial to developments in nuclear physics. He fled Nazi-occupied Denmark in 1943 and later worked under the alias Nicholas Baker at Los Alamos on the Manhattan Project. He spent his later years of life lobbying Governments and internationally for transparency and co-operation in nuclear science and the peaceful use atomic energy.
