1st thus. xviii, 428pp, with tissue-guarded frontispiece and further illustrations by Hugh Thomson. Red cloth-covered boards with eleborate gilded foral designs on upper panel and spine. All edges gilt. Endpapers decorated with peacock design. 12mo. Boards a little rubbed and rounded on corners and ends of a lightly sunned spine. Cloth unevenly faded and mottled along fore edge on verso, with some minor marks and indentations on edges. A few small marks on endpapers; some faint and occasional spotting on first and last few leaves, tissue guard a little toned, previous owner’s inscription dated 1897 on the first true leaf, else internally neat, clean and tight.
The first issue of Austen’s Mansfield Park to include Hugh Thomson’s celebrated illustrations. Produced by Macmillan and Co in 1897 in two states, this the deluxe version which includes elaborately gilded covers. A separate state exists in plain red cloth with gilt titles.
