320pp with engraved frontispiece. Bound in half roan leather over strong cloth, with gilt lettering and decoration to spine. Sprinkled page edges. (Boards worn, rubbed at corners with a few small scuffs around spine). Internally, very mild page toning but more marked on endpapers, and occasional, mild signs of fingering. Previous owner’s name on front endpaper. Published in this edition after newspaper serialisation in 21 weekly parts, under the title ‘Jessie Melville, Or the Double Sacrifice’. Considered to be one of Pae’s ‘Edinburgh Novels’. Pae was a popular Scottish author in the mid-19th century, many of his sensational stories being serialised in newspapers and journals prior to publication in book form.
