A fine translation of Mikhail Lermontov’s A Hero of Our Time, widely regarded as the first major psychological thriller in Russian literature. First translated into English in 1853 (and, much later by Vladimir Nabokov) under the title Sketches of Life in the Caucasus, by a Russe, it is structured as five interconnected stories revolving around the same main character, Grigory Pechorin. This edition features a foreword by Prince Mirsky one of the finest Russian literary historians. Merton’s translation is often considered the most readable and flowing available, as Merton prioritised turning the Russian into natural, elegant English.
