John Collingwood Bruce (1805-1892) was an ordained  nonconformist minister and schoolteacher but better known as an historian of Tyneside with a special interest in the Roman Wall (Hadrian’s Wall).  He developed a numbering system for the structures of the Wall which became the standard means of reference.
