Part Two (of two) only.  First edition, first impression.  vi, 471-902pp, with colour plate frontispiece and one further section of colour plate illustrations.  Black cloth-covered boards with metallic stamped titles to spine.  8vo.  Volume is clean, square, and boards crisp.  Sadly a little spotting to text block edges.  Internally neat, clean, bright and tight. In its original pictorial dust wrapper, rubbed on extreme corners and a little bumped on extreme edges, slightly shelf worn.

The History of the Hobbit presents, for the first time, the complete text of the Tolkien’s original manuscript of The Hobbit, accompanied ny Rateliff’s commentary looking at the story behind Tolkien’s tale and its themes.  It records numerous changes made to the text both before and after publication and examines how they reflect Tolkien’s ever-developing concept of Middle-earth.  Volume also includes the text of Tolkien’s attempt to recast The Hobbit in the style of Lord of the Rings.
