First, and likely only, edition. 198pp, plus plate portrait frontispiece and twenty-nine further plate illustrations, and many more drawings etc in text. In blue cloth boards (gently rubbed on corners and spine ends, perhaps a tad faded). Flecking and foxing on text block edges; first and last few leaves have some spotting. There’s a label on the front free endpaper indicating that this volume was once award to M Tucker, a College Prefect, as the Dorothea Beale Award. Tiny nick on top edge of title page. Just about a very good copy without dust jacket. 4to. Produced some quarter of a century after her death, this is an appreciative study of the impact and influence of the pioneering educationalist Dorothea Beale on Cheltenham Ladies College, where she taught and was Principal from 1858 to her death in 1906, and on the development of education for girls in the latter half of the 19th century.
