Reprint.  268pp.  Full  red calf’s leather binding with gilt decorations.  Emblem of St Andrew’s College Bradfield emblazoned on upper panel.  All edges marbled.  Inner gilt dentelles surrounding marbled endpapers (binding by the renown Relfe Brothers, London, whose stamp appears opposite the title page).  12mo.  Covers are worn and rubbed, rounded and scuffed on corners, lower third of front joint cracked and spine leather dry and a little flaky.  Internally a tight on toning in page margins else neat, clean, bright and tight.

A common reprint of Carlyle’s classic work on heroes and hero worship in a rather fine, attractive prize binding by the Relfe  Brothers, likely dating from the late 1890s.  St Andrew’s College, Bradfield was founded by Thomas Stevens in the 1840s as a college for a small number of boys from modest backgrounds – it is now a co-educational public school and part of the Rugby Group (along with Rugby, Harrow, Shrewsbury, Wellington and Charterhouse).
