Described as a new and cheaper edition.  lxxx, 552pp, with tissue guarded engraved frontispiece, two further full page engravings, numerous illustrations in text and a fold-out map of Stanley’s route across Eastern Central Africa.  Deep red cloth-covered boards, gilt-stamped lettering on the spine.  `12mo.  Cloth us rubbed on corners and the ends and joints of a slightly sunned spine, with small scar on rear joint; a little marked.  Text block edges dull and darkened.  Prize presentation plate, dated 1902-3 on the front paste down; endpapers toned and spotted; some spotting on first and last few leaves; tissue guard browned and spotted, affecting title page else internally neat and clean.  Very slightly shaken.

A lovely vintage copy of this important account of Henry Stanley’s 1871-72 journey across Eastern Central Africa in search of the missionary and explorer David Livingstone which was said to end with Stanley voicing the pithy line, ‘Dr Livingstone, I presume?’
