Here, for the first time, the plates – celebrated as some of the most striking visual records of 19th century maritime history – from that original publication are reproduced with a commentary in English. The commentary specifically accompanies the 72 plates (and is not a full translation of Leplace’s original work), allowing English-speaking historians and collectors ot understand the exact background, artist notes and locations presented in the aquatints.
