Thomas Audley (1488-1544) was one of the first professional soldiers.  He participated in Henry VIII’s last wars against France, commanding important garrisons. At some point during the reign of Henry’s son, Edward VI, he wrote a briefing for the boy-king on the art of war  forming what was perhaps the very first comprehensive Tudor document on warfare.
