Six consecutive issues of the monthly arts magazine The Studio, issued from July to December 1939, bound without covers into a single volume. 264pp, profusely illustrated in colour and black and white. Half bound in brown leader over brow cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on the spine. Marbled endpapers. 4to. Covers are heavily worn, rubbed at edges and rounded on corners and scuffed all around a rubbed and faded backstrip. Some indentations on edges. Bookplate from Lancaster Reference Library on front paste down (no other library markings), with somewhat clumsy tape repairs (now failing) to hinges. Some toning to text block edges and extreme page margins, lightly toned prelims. A couple of strained gutters and some minor signs of handling and use throughout.
The Studio, founded in 1893, was a fine arts and decortive arts magazine with a ‘visuals first’ mission. Each issue presented an ecletic mix of contemporary art, arts and crafts and Old Masters but in particular the magazine exerted a strong influence on the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements of the early 20th century
