A study of the controversy between the famous 19th century explorers, Sir Richard Burton and John Hanning Speke, who quarrelled over Speke’s claim to have discovered the source of the River Nile. in 1857-59.   Speke was killed by a gun shot – probably accidentally – the day before he was due to debate with Burton in 1864, giving Burton the upper hand in contemporary discussions on the matter.  This study takes new evidence and research into account in retelling the story.
