First edition, first printing (no dating or print information in volume, as called for).  256pp, with colour plate frontispiece and two (of a called for four) further monochrome plate illustrations.  Pictorial cloth-covered covered boards, gilt titles on spine. Grey endpapers. 8vo.  Cloth is a little worn and faded, rubbed at corners and spine ends.  Text block edges dull and darkened.  Some occasional minor flaws to page edges.  Gift inscription dated 1916 on front free endpaper, previous owner’s inscription on reverse of frontispiece, also dated 1916, else internally neat and clean.

A lovely vintage copy of what is perhaps Angela Brazil’s best-loved story, albeit it flawed with the absence of two of the called for plate illustrations.
