First edition, first impression.  xii, 476pp, with monochrome portrait plate frontispiece and four further plate illustrations.  Rd cloth-covered boards with gilt motif and gilt titles on the spine.  Top edge gilt.  Title page printed in red and black.  8vo.  Boards heavily but unevenly faded, especially around edges and over spine, gently rounded at spine ends.  Some toning to fore and lower edges.   Some scattered foxing on first and last few leaves.  

Reginald Brett, the second Viscount Esher was a historian, Liberal politician and courtier, best known for his activities as a grey eminence.
