Years after leaving the medical profession in favour of a literary one, the world-famous creator of detective Sherlock Holmes, resumed his field interest to write a contemporaneous history of the conflict between the two Boer Republics and the British colonial power. First published in 1900, a year after the war broke out, it went through many editions and printings, before the end of the war in May 1902. This complete edition was issued in September 1902, with the new preface referring to this as the ‘final edition’.
