Complete edition (complete in one volume).  x, 770pp, with five coloured, folding maps at rear, and publisher’s advertisements.   Includes a new prefer by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, dated 1902, not present in earlier printings.  In blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on spine.  8vo. Cloth is worn and faded, chipped and cracked around spine ends, with some mottling and marks.  Text block edges spotted.  Previous owner’s name on front paste down.  Endpapers moderately tanned and spotted, hinges strained else internally neat, clean, bright and tight.  All maps called for present, which is not always the case with this volume.

Years after leaving the medical profession in favour of a literary one, the world-famous creator of detective Sherlock Holmes, resumed his field interest to write a contemporaneous history of the conflict between the two Boer Republics and the British colonial power.  First published in 1900, a year after the war broke out, it went through many editions and printings, before the end of the war in May 1902.  This complete edition was issued in September 1902, with the new preface referring to this as the ‘final edition’.
