First edition, fifth printing.  [xii], 306pp, with numerous black and white plate illustrations.  Purple publisher’s cloth-covered boards, red lettering front and spine.  8vo.  Ex reference library with library bookplate on front paste down and ‘discarded’ stamp on front free endpaper (no other library markings).  Cloth worn and unevenly faded, rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends, fraying slightly at spine head.  Text block edges darkened.   Hint of toning on endpapers else internally neat, clean, bright and tight.

The Schauffler Memorial Library bookplate on the front paste down indicates that the volume was once gifted to the Library by a Charlotte Ullman.

Geraldine Farrar (1882-1967) was an American lyric soprano, noted for her beauty, acting ability and the intimate timbre of her voice, and for her e seven-year love affair with Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini and close, possibly romantic, friendship with fellow singer Caruso.  She also found success as an actress in silent movies between opera seasons, inspiring a large following among young women – her fans were nicknamed Gerry-flappers.
