4th edition, revised and enlarged.  464pp, two plates illustrations and further line drawings, diagrams etc in text.  Burgundy cloth-covered boards with blind stamped decorations on panels and gilt lettering on the spine  Black endpapers.  8vo.  Cloth a little faded and rubbed at edges, slightly sunned, spine ends rubbed.  Text block edges lightly toned.   Previous owner’s name inked on first true leaf, a hint of toning and spotting else internally neat, clean, bright and tight.

Based on a series of lecture the physics of sound and acoustics which Tyndall delivered at the Royal Institution in the 1860s, this edition contains  much additional material including descriptions of recent innovations such as the telephones of Sir Alexander Graham Bell and Edison, the microphone and the phonograph.
