First edition. Lithographed title page and 37 further colour-tinted lithographic prints and one chromolithographed colour map. Printed thick card covers with cloth over spine. Large folio. Boards heavily worn and rubbed at edges, corners and spine tips rounded, soiled and spotted but strong and square. Internally the endpapers show some slight toning, and there is some faint, very occasional spotting, not affecting prints, else neat, clean, bright and tight. Lithography by Johanes Gerardus Keulemans. Willoughby Verner, a British military officer, was part of the military expedition (1884-1885) sent to relieve General Gordon in Khartoum. En route under difficult circumstances, Verner made drawings in his sketch book, which were later made into the colour lithographs in this book, each accompanied by Verner’s descriptive commentary. Some show serene desert landscapes; or native inhabitants, or scenes on boats others are on military and warfare themes. The book starts with a dedication to Queen Victoria, followed by a list of subscribers, a brief preface and a table of contents. Included at rear are 2pp of advertisements. Scarce title.
