First edition, first impression. viii, 250pp plus 8pp of advertisements; 4 colour tinted plate illustrations. Green cloth-covered boards with gilt design and text on spine (now sun bleached), gilt design on front and blind embossed design on rear cover. All edges gilt. Mild rubbing of the spine ends, with a few very short tears in cloth at heel, cloth crack on upper portion of rear spine joint. Sun bleached and mottled all over, edges on rear bumped in places, corners rounded. Slightly cocked. Gutter stretched mid way through. Mild foxing primarily on prelim pages. Previous owner’s label on prelim page, another owner’s name on front free endpaper along with notes in pencil. Inscription reads “The Editor of the Sussex Advertiser, with the Author’s compliments” but no verification that this is in the author’s hand. Pencil notes on front free endpaper from previous owner, recalling his memories of knowing the author personally. Small 8vo.
