Lee Kuan Yew, Cambridge graduate, barrister and politician, was elected as the first prime minister on independent Singapore and served in that office from 1959 to 1990. A member of the People’s Action Party, his authoritarian government oversaw the transformation of Singapore from a colonial outpost to a high-developed country and one of the four economic Asian Tigers of the latter part of the 20th century. To many he is seen as the founding father of modern Singapore. This is his vision for the future of Singapore and for prosperity in Asia.
