An examination of the German National Socialism of the early part of the 20th century which sets to one side its appeal as a new religion and focusses on the vision of humankind as a part of nature, allowing ‘for a fusion of idealism and pragmatism singular in its nature and effectiveness. The author sees National Socialism as embodying the search for what Mircea Eliade has called ‘sacred time’ – the opportunity to step out of the terror of history’.
