The fourth volume of Lees-Milne’s diaries.
James Lees-Milne (1908-1997) was a prominent architectural historian, the first historic buildings secretary for the National Trust during the post-war period when high taxation and the aftermath of war forced many landed families to consider abandoning or demolish their estates ancestral homes. Lees-Milne travelled extensively across the country to arrange for the transfer of these properties to the National Trust – including Petworth House, Knole, Sissinghurst – earning the title of Saviour of the Country House. But he is justly also remembered for his diaries – witty, acerbic, sharply-observed and candid, his commentary on mid-twentieth century high society earnt him a cult following.
