Undated but published circa 1930. 254pp, black and white portrait plate frontispiece, further black and white plate illustrations interleaved in text. Orange cloth-covered boards, the front panel framed with black rules, black lettering on spine. 8vo. Cloth a little worn, gently rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends. Text block edges spotted. Previous owner’s neatly inked inscription, dated 1932 on toned front endpapers, rear endpapers similarly toned. Faint and occasional spotting on first and last few leaves. The same previous owner has also inked their name on the first page of the prologue.
An account of the Mayerling Incident – the events surrounding the apparent murder-suicide of Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria and his young mistress, Mary Vetsera, who were found dead in an imperial hunting lodge in Mayerling, near Vienna, in January 1890; and of the destabilisation of the Habsburg succession the death of the heir apparent caused.
