Mad Jack Mytton, as he was known, (1796-1834) was an aristocrat, rake and eccentric of the Regency period, briefly a Tory Member of Parliament (paying for his votes) for Shrewsbury and sometime High Sheriff of Shropshire and Merionethshire. Disreputable, he was a gambler and enjoyed horse-racing – his horse won the Gold Cup in 1825 – as well as hunting. A spend thrift, he was often in debt, and ultimately imprisoned in Shrewsbury Goal.
