The first 12 volumes (of 22) from Contet’s magnificent photographic survey of the architecture and interior decoration of the grand old hotels of Paris, arranged quarter by quarter. Each volume is a portfolio of essays, written by experts such as – Contet himself or J Vacquier – followed by loose leaf plates. Volumes have between 40 and 68 plates, all present as called for. Portfolio boards are quarter green cloth over marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering on the spine, closed with green cloth ribbons. Elephant folio (approximately 19 inches by 13 inches). Portfolios are worn and rubbed, sunned to various degrees over the spine, some cracked or fraying at ends, portfilio endpapers mostly tanned.
