First edition, first impression. x, 274pp, with a portrait plate frontispiece. Deep blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on the spine. 8vo. Cloth is a bit worn, gently rubbed at edges, rounded at corners and ends of a ridged spine. Text block edges a little yellowed. Previous owner ‘same neatly inked on slightly toned endpapers, else internally neat. clean, bright and tight.
Author and writer Newman Flowers (died 1964) became the Head of publishing house, Cassell and Co, transforming the company’s fortunes. His largest literary undertaking at Cassells was editing the journals of fellow writer Arnold Bennett. Ruperh Hart- Davis later commented on the ‘prudish timidity of the editor’ and indeed Flowers left out much. Hus son, Desmond, followed his father at Cassell.
