A collection of seven plate illustrations of Jerusalem and the Holy Land and regional costumes, after drawings made on the spot by Mrs Ewald (possibly the wife of the missionary F C Ewald, although this is uncertain). Other sources suggest that the full collection included 12 plates, but we know of at least two other copies with just seven plates (although the selection here differs). The plates are: 1. Jerusalem from the North West, 2. Costume and Likeness of a Native Jew and Jewess of Jerusalem, 3. Bethlehem and Rachel’s Tomb, 4. Costume and Likeness of Wandering Arabs from the Plains of Jerusalem, 5. Hebron and Machpelah, 6. Costume and Likeness of the Present Samaritan Priest, Rabbi Amram and his Family at Nablous, the Ancient Sychar, and 7. First View of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives Coming From Bethany. The four landscape plates were engraved by W Simpson, a leading engraver of the time; and the three costume plates are hand-coloured; all seven lithographed by Day and Son, lithographers to Queen Victoria. Bound in green cloth covered boards, blind ruled with gilt titles, chalk glazed endpapers, titles etc pencilled on verso of front free endpaper (no title page), all plates tissue-guarded. (Boards worn and a little marked, rubbed at edges and worn through on rounded corners, previous owner’s name on front paste down, foxed throughout, especially on reverse of plates, but not affecting images, tissue guards are fragile, tanned and creased. Oblong 4to. Scarce.
