viii, 560pp, plus 56pp plate illustrations. Blue cloth covered boards (a little worn at edges and joints), with chipped white spine label (indicating that the volume cost 2s 6d at the time of publication). Internally just a little light tanning to endpapers, else bright and clean. Bookplate on front endpaper indicating that the volume once belonged to Sir Philip Edward Pilditch, Baronet of Bartopps in the county of Surrey, and a conservative MP from 1918 to 1931. A substantial and important volume on horse and stabling, including architects plans for good and bad stable design showing ventilation, draining, siting, etc. First published in 1869, the later editions from the 1880s include additional material and Fitwygram’s sometime infamous estimate of a price of 45 per horse for stabling. Other equestrian writers of the time, such as George Fleming (Practical Horsekeeping, 1886), often endorsed Fitzwygram rather than repeat the guidance. Glorious plate illustration drawings of stables, parts of horse etc. Referenced in Anne Grimsham’s magnificent The Horse : A Bibliography, p. 223 etc. A must for anyone interested in the history of horses, stable management or collecting equestrian books.
