Lt Col Robert Gayre of Gayre and Nigg was a Scottish anthropologist and heraldic historian and a self-style clan chief. His book is an historical study of flags and military standards, banners, and pennons in Europe, with a strong emphasis on Scottish heraldic practices and conventions. Generally regarded as a definitive work on the topic, and noted for its detailing of Scottish heraldic conventions in the late 1950s, the author also well noted outside the field of heraldry for his controversial views in relation to scientific racism and white supremacist theories.
