Tom Wintringham – socialist, military historian and veteran of the Spanish Civil War – published this, his treatise on politics, war and military theory, in the anxious early days of the second world war. He questions why modern warfare had reached a static deadlock, and puts forward a theory for democratic societies to break it.  It draws heavily on his experiences of fighting fascism in the Spanish Civil War and serves as a precursor to his famous practical manual of guerrilla tactics, New Ways of War, all directed at defeating Hitler’s Nazi Germany.  Hard  to find.
